Following the various maritime security challenges faced within the West and Central Africa region, substantial efforts have been made by member states and partners to improve maritime governance in the region. Particularly, there has been a wide range of support from partners in the areas of law enforcement training, legal and governance reforms as well as technology and equipment for some countries. This has resulted in general improvement in law enforcement and maritime governance capacity across the region. Despite these achievements, the issues of repetitive cycle of funding limitations, lack of coordination of programmes, gaps in needs analysis and ultimately challenges in ensuring sustainability of training outcomes have been identified as key factors undermining capacity building efforts. There is thus the need for a harmonised and comprehensive approach in synchronising efforts of partners and member States in the delivery of training and capacity building. In pursuit of the objective of properly undertaking training needs analysis, the UNODC in collaboration with the ICC have a training matrix that maps out training gaps and needs of member states of the Gulf of Guinea region (GoG). Other partners in the region including INTERPOL and the US Government (USG) continue to support training and capacity building in the region through a number of programmes and channels.
